Embark on a revealing journey from the least to the most polluted countries globally

To rank the most air-polluted countries in the world, we consulted the IQAir World Air Quality Ranking. This database provided us with a list of countries and information on the annual average measured concentration of particulate matter (PM2.5). PM2.5 is widely available and considered the most hazardous air pollutant impacting human health. PM2.5 is measured by micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). We used data available for the latest year in their dataset, which is for the year 2022.

Tajikistan has faced fluctuations in air pollution levels, driven by factors such as vehicular emissions and industrial activities. The lack of consistent data makes it challenging to track long-term trends

TAJIKISTAN

10

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 46

EGYPT

9

Egypt's air quality is affected by emissions from vehicles and industrial activities. The political situation in the country has hindered environmental regulations and enforcement

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 46.5

INDIA

8

India, with its rapid urbanization and industrialization, has faced significant air pollution challenges.

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 53.3

KUWAIT

Kuwait's air quality is affected by factors such as industrial activities, oil refineries, and construction dust

7

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 55.8

BURKINA FASA

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. In Burkina Faso, energy mainly comes from burning biomass such as firewood and charcoal

6

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 63

BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is a South Asian country that ranks among the top 5 most air polluted countries in the world. Due to construction, traffic, and industrial pollution, Bangladesh’s air quality is among the world’s worst.

5

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 65.8

Bahrain, despite its small size, faces significant air pollution challenges primarily due to industrial activities and oil refineries. The government has initiated measures to combat this issue

4

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 80.1

BAHARAIN

PAKISTAN

Pakistan has consistently faced severe air pollution, and the data indicates fluctuations in pollution levels. Major sources of pollution include vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, and crop burning.

3

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 70.9

IRAQ

Iraq is the second most polluted country on our list. The rise in air pollution can be attributed to increased industrial activities and a growing number of vehicles on the road

2

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 80.1

CHAD

Annual Average PM2.5 Concentration (μg/m³): 89.7
